The city is located in a valley, at 830 m of altitude. It has a dry cold
climate (humidity at about 50) and annual average temperature of 17°C. The
city is surrounded by mountains. Pico do Caledônia being the highest, at 2
310 m above sea level and the 2nd highest mountain in Rio de janeiro State.
The Mata Atlântica is part of the region, providing beautiful walks, through
the mountains and waterfalls.
It is a touristic city, with a population of about 200 thousand inhabitants
and many industries with nationwide importance, such as : Ypu (leather
goods), Triumph (underwear and beach wear), Sinimbu (ribbons), Arp (laces),
Haga (locks), Stam (locks and padlocks), besides having over 3 500 companies
of ready made clothes (biggest nacional producer) and also being the biggest
nacional producer of goat milk and its byproducts.

- Skyway
- Queijaria Escola - A place where Swiss masters from Fribourg teach the
students the secrets of the production of cheese. There, you can taste and
buy the products.
- Chocolataria Escola Henri Nestlé - Recently founded. It is providing
chocolate production courses (for small chocolate manufacturers).
- Swiss Colonization Museum
- Jardins do Nego - Gardens with natural sculptures (sculptured banks)

- Colégio Anchieta - Centenial construction surrounded by palm trees.
- Pico do Caledônia - 2 310 m above sea level. In clear days, from the top you
can see great part of the state, including the city of Rio de Janeiro.
- Pico da Cruz - At only 630 m above the city, you can take a walk of about
1.30 h to get to the top.
- Mosteiro da Santa Cruz - There you can attend a catholic mass in the most
traditional way seen in Brazil - in latin, Gregorian Chants; men and women
separated, the women have to wear long skirts and their hair needs to covered
by a veil.
